EIGHT men who allegedly resisted arrest and also threatened to kill a police constable have been further remanded by the Suva Magistrates Court.
Jone Vakarisi, Tevita Bulanaivalu, Ledua Gudru, Sekove Serukalou, Jese Sorovi, Toni Sokowasa, Chanel Antonio and Mark Ross appeared before Magistrate Liyanage Wickramasekara yesterday.
They are charged with one count each of theft, two counts each of criminal intimidation, eight counts each of resisting arrest and one count each of damaging property.
Mr Wickramasekara told the eight men the case was of public interest and the offence was serious.
He also ordered for Mr Bulanaivalu and Mr Ross to be taken to the Colonial War Memorial Hospital immediately to be medically examined.
Mr Wickramasekara further ordered that all the accused persons be given proper medical attention while at the remand centre.
He made the following orders after Mr Bulanaivalu informed the court that the accused were not given proper medical attention even though they had asked for it.
Mr Bulanaivalu claimed the police officers also assaulted them, but they had not done anything to harm the officers.
He said they were human beings and they must also be treated with respect.
The accused said they had only damaged the police vehicle.
The magistrate then advised the accused persons to lodge a report with the officer-in-charge at the remand centre and the Commissioner of Prisons.
Mr Vakarisi’s lawyer Jitendra Reddy made a verbal bail application in court but this was strongly objected by police prosecutor Corporal Raymond Filipe.
Mr Wickramasekara refused the bail application and stated that the charges were serious in nature and that the accused had pending cases in court.
The case has been adjourned to August 20.
