FIJI 7s captain Osea Kolinisau has been selected as the flag bearer for Team Fiji at the Rio Olympics next month.
Team Fiji chef de mission Cathy Wong said the 7s captain was chosen by the Team Fiji management.
“Usually it is the management which picks the flag bearer and the uniform is picked by the athletes,” Wong said.
“The selection criteria for the flag bearer is the best performing athlete from the last Olympics and the best performing athlete in the last four years on and off the field.
“We then called for nominations and once the nominations come through, the management votes then we take it up to the executive board.”
The other four athletes nominated were Apolonia Vaivai (weight-lifting), Robert Elder (archery), Kolinisau and Leslie Copeland (athletics).
Meanwhile, the first batch of Team Fiji leaves on Sunday with the last group to depart on July 29.
The team is expected to return from the Games on August 19.
