Dr Guise shows the flag

The Speaker of the Papua New Guinea House of Assembly, Dr John Guise, was finally able to unfurl his country’s flag on Fiji soil on Thursday. Dr Guise brought the flag with him to Fiji for Australian parliamentary conference. Because of political protocol the flag could not be flown officially.

Peace talks break down

A two and half hour meeting at the Opposition office in Suva on Wednesday night of the National Federation Party leaders to try to avert a split in its annual meeting on Sunday failed to resolve differences.

Local man manager

The management of the Reef Hotel has been taken over by a local man. He is Mr Temo Sukanaivalu who was assistant manager at the resort before his appointment.

Bale speaks of early ’92 poll

The general election could be held as early as next February-March. But an election was more likely to be held by May, the chairman of the Electoral and Constituency Boundaries Commission, Qoroniasi Bale, told a press conference in Suva yesterday.

FSC to lay off workers

The Fiji Sugar Corporation will begin laying off Lautoka, Rarawai and Penang mill employees from Tuesday in the face of a harvest boycott by western division farmers.

State sacks senior officer

The Government sacked Commissioner Eastern Savenaca Draunidalo from the civil service on charges of improper conduct and misuse of a government vehicle. Public Service Commission chairman Sakiasi Waqanivavalagi found him guilty of two of three charges. He was accused of being in a compromising situation with a woman inside a government vehicle in December last year and May this year.

Speight inquiry will go ahead

The preliminary inquiry into treason charges against George Speight will proceed next month despite complaints from the Speight brothers that they have yet to secure legal representation.

$15m a year

Fiji earns more than $15 million in remittance annually from local seafarers serving on overseas registered vehicles. This was highlighted by the Fiji Maritime Worker Association at the Seafarers Day which was commemorated by members at the School of Maritime yesterday.
