Ever since the nationality of the citizens of this country was changed to a new nationality called “Fijian” there has been non-stop reference to the nationality.
Its been the Fijian this, the Fijian that, for example: the Fijian economy, the Fijian Tourism Expo, the Fijian Government, the Fijian President, the list goes on, as opposed to, for example, the Government of Fiji or the President of Fiji.
I suppose one of the gist of these non-stop references is to stress, to drum into us, to hit the nail on the head, to hit home, that we are all Fijians nationality-wise and therefore the word Fijian is applicable as in the examples given above.
But with the latter in mind, I am just wondering whether the name of our beloved country is still Fiji or is it “Fijian”, “Fijians”, “The Fijian”, “The Fijian country” or some other name?
The new nationality seems to be taking precedence over the country name.
