FIJI is fortunate to be one of just four countries in the world to pilot a space-based and information and communication technology program.

Sponsored by the ADB and implemented by the Asian Institute of Technology, the program aims to strengthen disaster resilience.

According to director NDMO Akapusi Tuifagalele, it could not have come at a better time.

“Looking back at what we experienced through TC Winston, this program is timely in that we get to talk about those experiences and learn how to better prepare ourselves should such disasters happen in the future,” he said.

The program will allow for the use of space-based technology such as satellites to monitor and record the impact of natural disasters, making it easier for response teams.

“As it is, we rely a lot on village heads and community representatives to make their assessments and come to us before we can decide what steps to take next. But with this technology, just from the push of a button, we will get satellite images and know exactly which places have been affected and the extent of assistance that’s needed.

“Fiji is seen as the hub of the Pacific and because of this, we have been chosen to pilot the program and while we’re excited about this opportunity, we will make the most of it to ensure that Fiji is well equipped for such situations.”

ADB infrastructure space technology specialist Tadayoshi Yahata said the Asian Pacific region was the worst exposed to natural disasters.

“This is why this program is very important. It allows us to collect and share information on disaster and disaster risks to strengthen our resilience.

“This technology has been used at numerous disasters in Japan as you all know we had tsunamis and earthquakes.

“Through this technology we were able to act swiftly and we were more prepared,” Mr Yahata said.

More than 20 representatives from Government and different sectors around Fiji as well as information technology-related agencies gathered to discuss this program at an inception workshop at Novotel Hotel in Nadi on Wednesday.
