Haka is not only performed prior to and after a rugby match as a challenge, as seen popularised by many NZ sports teams. Haka is performed at weddings, funerals, welcoming guests and other special occasions.
With regards to the NZ Army performing the haka on Vanua Balavu prior to their departure,
it was done to acknowledge great achievements.
