NATIONAL athlete Albert Miller Jr provided stiff competition to Papua New Guinea sprinter Charles Livuan but had to settle for second best in the open men’s sprint event in the Shop N Save Athletics Fiji weekly competition at the ANZ Stadium.
Livuan and compatriot Ephrauin Lerkin were in Fiji and competing in the weekly meets.
Also this weekend, there was an increase in the number of female athletes.
Athletics Fiji administrator Selwyn Williams said more athletes would trickle in as the schools meets nears.
“We have found that students start coming to our meets to test themselves as they prepare for the school’s games,” he said.
There had been lack of competitors in the field events as well.
Athletics Fiji was encouraging schools and athletes to become a part of the competition and help the sport grow.
Meanwhile, Athletics Fiji officials met after the meet to discuss issues for the Melanesian Championship which would be hosted in Suva in July.
