Serving prisoner appeals

A SERVING prisoner who was found guilty of money laundering and corrupt practices, appeared in the High Court in Suva last Friday to make submissions for the appeal of her convictions and sentence.

Monica Monita Aurora was sentenced to seven years for the first count of money laundering and six months imprisonment for corrupt practices by the High Court in Suva, on February 17, 2012.

Both counts were to be served concurrently that is seven years with six years non-parole.

Monita, who was represented by Pravesh Sharma of Victoria Chambers, appeared before Justice William Calanchini in the Court of Appeal.

The respondent was Michael Delaney of the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

The two parties made submissions in order for the court to determine and allocate a date for the hearing of the appeal.

The appellant had already been granted leave for an appeal on June 2, 2014.

She applied for an appeal for the conviction and sentencing.

Justice Calanchini informed both parties that a hearing date has not yet been determined.

Mr Sharma, for the appellant, applied for bail pending the appeal.
