Weedkillers and cancer

A very good point was made by Gabriel Simpson (18/1) regarding his concerns about glyphosate, the main ingredient in most weedkillers.

Scientific research has proved that glyphosate is directly linked to Alzheimer’s disease, birth defects and chronic liver disease.

Additionally, in March of last year, the World Health Organization conducted a study which also proved that glyphosate is a highly probable cause of cancer.

For this reason, weedkillers that contain this particular ingredient have been banned in many countries.

It would be very ideal to undertake a research of the same sort in Fiji, considering the total percentage of root crops and vegetables produced by our local commercial farmers, let alone small-scale farmers.

More than fifty per cent of Fiji’s entire population rely on the local municipal markets for their weekly supply of vegetables.

This could mean that more than half the population are most likely to suffer from one or all of the abovementioned diseases.

So do we prefer the prohibition of glyphosate or divert more funds to healthcare services?
