TRADEWINDS Marine Limited has begun offering paper straws at a subsidised price of five cents in an effort to reduce waste, specifically single waste plastics.
In an interview with The Fiji Times, company accountant Sumeet Singh said this initiative was for their service stations in Lami, Victoria Parade in Suva, Vitogo Parade in Lautoka and Yaroi in Savusavu.
Apart from this, he said they also had the yacht chandlery called ‘The YachtShop’ located in Lami (main shop), Vuda Marina, Port Denarau, Copra Shed Marina and The Royal Suva Yachtclub.
“Tradewinds Marine has discontinued supplying free plastic straws from July 1, 2018. For our customers wanting straws, we are offering paper straws at a subsidised price of five cents. We have extended this initiative to our affiliated company restaurants and cafe’s at Vuda Point Marina (already started with this) and Coprashed Marina, Savusavu, which will roll out this month,” Mr Singh said.
He said they had completely stopped issuing plastic bags for all their yacht shops around Fiji.
“We are giving biodegradable paper bags to customers at no additional cost. We will soon extend this paper bags to all our service station and completely get rid of plastic bags.”
