THE Then India Sanmarga Ikya (TISI) Sangam Fiji launched a Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple history book in Nadi marking a series of events celebrating the religious organisation’s 100th anniversary.
Author Dr Ponnu Goundar said the commemorative book was driven by a fear that their forefather’s stories would fade with time.
“This book was borne from a simple but profound concern for a long time to write something about the Lord Murugan’s presence in this country,” said Dr Goundar.
“The story of our call, struggle, faith and trying times must not fade with time.
“Most of us remember the struggles that have taken place, but people should know the origins of this temple and how it came about.”
He said the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple of Nadi was not just a structure of stones, bricks and sculpture.
“It is a living symbol of devotion, resilience, unity and identity. It came within the prayers of our forefathers.
“As the years passed, I increasingly felt that much of this sacred history lived only in fading memories, fading photographs and fading records.
“I feared that if we did not act now future generations might know the grandeur of this temple but not the sacrifices that made it possible.”
Chief guest Indian High Commissioner to Fiji Suneet Mahta said for decades the Sri Siva Subramaniya Swami Temple of Nadi exemplified the enduring devotion of a community to its heritage.
“Dr Goundar’s book beautifully captures this journey of faith, resilience and cultural pride,” he said.
“It chronicles the temple’s significance, the collective efforts of devotees and the vital role this sacred place has played in fostering identity, unity and spiritual growth within the Indo-Fijian community.”
