Niraj Surend Prasad has been remanded in custody after appearing before the Suva Magistrates Court today, in connection with an alleged theft involving an elderly man.

The accused was charged with one count of theft, allegedly involving the ATM card of 86-year-old Malakai Kauwale, which was said to have occurred on January 5, 2026, in Suva.

Police prosecutor Sergeant Salote Bola objected to bail, informing the court that Prasad had two previous convictions for theft and was also facing an absconding bail matter. The prosecution submitted that these factors raised concerns about the accused’s likelihood of complying with bail conditions.

The case was called in Magistrates Court Four before Magistrate Charles Ratakele. Prasad waived his right to legal counsel during the proceedings.

Magistrate Ratakele remanded the accused and adjourned the matter to January 12 to allow Prasad to file a formal bail application.

The accused remained in custody pending the next court appearance.
