New figures released by the Fiji Bureau of Statistics show that 873 residents departed Fiji for employment purposes in January 2026.
Of the total employment-related departures, 305 people travelled for employment for periods under three months, while 503 left for between three and 12 months.
A further 65 residents departed for work commitments lasting between one and five years. No departures for employment exceeded five years or were classified as permanent.
Education and training accounted for 851 departures while 684 residents travelled for business.
Emigration recorded 260 departures, including those leaving permanently or for more than five years.
Overall, Fiji recorded 19,500 resident departures in January 2026, with the majority travelling for short-term purposes. Most departures were for holidays (9,710), followed by visiting friends or relatives (6,702).
