Cricket Fiji is making strides as they gear up to host the largest ICC Women’s T20 World Cup East Asia Pacific (EAP) Qualifier, showcasing the talents of eight nations.

The participating countries include Cook Islands, Indonesia, Japan, Papua New Guinea, newcomers Philippines, Samoa, and Vanuatu.

Sitiveni Rokoro, the chief executive officer of Cricket Fiji, has expressed immense pride in hosting the first ICC Women’s pathway event in Suva.

He adds this event not only marks a significant milestone for Cricket Fiji but also stands as the largest ICC qualifier ever conducted in the East Asia Pacific region.

“A new inclusion this year is the Philippines who will make their debut in an ICC pathway event,” said Rokoro.

“This is a testament to the growth, inclusivity and regional collaboration that continue to drive the advancement of women’s cricket across the East Asia-Pacific.

“The region looks forward to South Korea meeting ICC requirements in time to field a team in the next qualifier.”

In terms of team preparations, Rokoro says broader training squad has been unveiled following the Super 4 tournament in May, with players engaging in weekly training sessions.

The final team selection is slated for early August ahead of the camp, and efforts are being made to integrate a few overseas-based players into the squad for this important campaign.

The primary goal for the team is to secure victory in the tournament and qualify for the subsequent round of the Global Qualifier.

“PNG is the top ranked team together with Indonesia. However, Vanuatu is the defending champions after dethroning PNG in the 2023 qualifier and they will be determined to retain their title.
