The Fiji 7s men’s team assistant coach Viliame Satala has called on the nation to support the team during the HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series leg in Singapore this weekend.

Fiji is grouped with Ireland, France and Japan.

It will be the first tournament that Fiji will participate in this year having missed the Malaga and Seville 7s tournaments in Spain.

Fiji played in the first two tournaments of the 2022-2023 HSBC World Rugby Sevens Series which were held in Dubai last November and December.

The national side finished fourth in the first tournament after losing 12-19 to Argentina in the third and fourth place playoffs, while in the second tournament, the team was placed ninth after failing to get to the quarter-finals.

Satala, a member of the 2005 Rugby World Cup Sevens victorious Fiji team, said the players were looking forward to their first international tournament of the year.

He said training had been good and the boys had worked very hard. They all are looking forward to this weekend,” Satala said.

“The fans should keep on supporting the team.

“There are some new players in the squad and they are on a learning curve.

“People should support them because they need motivation.”

Satala returns to the world rugby 7s scene after more than 15 years, this time as a coach. The Namoli villager and renowned international star who was dubbed ‘The Stretcher’ said it was great to be part of the team again after being a player.

“It has been a long time since I have been to the international stage like this,” he said.
