7s celebration plans

There are celebration plans in place for 2024 Olympic Games silver medallists, the Fiji 7s team, when they return to the country.

The side is expected to arrive in the country on Sunday, August 4 alongside the Fijiana 7s team.

Fiji Rugby Union interim chair Peter Mazey without revealing much said they will work in collaboration with the Fiji Government.

“They leave on August 2, and they arrive on Sunday, August 4.

“We will be working with government on what’s going to happen.

“I understand the Minister of Youth and Sports has already started on his way back to Fiji so he can be here to welcome the boys back and the girls, they are all coming at the same time,” he said.

While plans are in the works, the FRU is also mindful that players will want to spend time with their families.

“There will be plans for them but I’m sure they all want to get home.

“They have been in camp for a long time, some of them for the whole year so to get home and go back to their families will be something special.

“They need a break but then of course we get ready for the next round in November,” Mazey added.

Prior to the Olympic, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka had announced that all Team Fiji athlete and team that secures a podium finish in France will be rewarded with cash incentives.

This means the Fiji 7s players, coaches and management will get $20,000 for their silver finish as endorsed by Cabinet.

This is Fiji’s second best achievement at the games after winning two gold medals previously.

This is also Fiji’s first ever silver medal win for Team Fiji at the Olympic Games.

Apart from the men’s 7s team, the Fijiana team in the only other side to have won a medal at the Olympics for our nation.

The team finished third at the last Olympics in Tokyo to settle for bronze.

Both team the teams return from Paris on Sunday.
