68 road fatalities from January to October – Minister

There have been 68 road accident fatalities recorded from January to October 2023.

May and July recorded the highest fatalities – 11 and 10, respectively.

The breakdown per month:

  • January – 7
  • February – 9
  • March – 6
  • April – 9
  • May – 11
  • June – 5
  • July – 10
  • August – 5
  • September – 1
  • October – 5

Minister for Transport Ro Filipe Tuisawau also highlighted that the Land Transport Authority (LTA) had received 1414 texts via the LTA’s 582 text free platform during this period.

He said of those, 996 were analysed and registered by the authority, while 418 were irrelevant messages, such as blank messages.

The 10 common complaints received were:

  • Dangerous and careless driving
  • Driver conduct
  • Speeding
  • Illegal operation of private vehicles
  • Use of mobile communication
  • Bus service complaint
  • Fail to obey traffic light
  • Inconsiderate driving
  • Denial of taxi service breaching PSV permit conditions, and
  • Resolution of complaints.

“The LTA Has resolved 84 per cent of the complaints received and registered,” Ro Filipe said.

“The remaining 16 per cent are on hold due to lack of information from the complainant or reluctance to provide a written statement.

“The LTA has counseled drivers concerned both verbally and in writing, and issued traffic infringement notices (TINs) when appropriate.”
