More than half of crimes against Fiji’s senior citizens involve property, Parliament was told today.
“In 2024, 1,945 cases of crimes against our senior citizens were reported, and 62% of these were related to property theft,” said Minister for Women, Child and Social Protection, Sashi Kiran.
“Too often, these crimes are committed by people known to the victims, including family members, robbing our elders of the resources they worked a lifetime to earn.”
Ms Kiran also raised broader concerns over elder abuse.
“Domestic and family violence, psychological and sexual harassment, and financial exploitation through scams are on the rise. These are not just personal tragedies—they are national issues that demand national solutions,” she said.
She concluded by urging the nation to honor its elders.
“Aging is not a burden; it is a triumph. Our elders embody wisdom, resilience, and perseverance. It is our duty to ensure their twilight years are filled with honor, comfort, and care.”
