The M-PAiSA scam is worth more than $610,000, says Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga.
In Parliament yesterday, Mr Turaga said it was because of the increasing number of digital scams that State prosecutors were being trained in cyber crime.
“The ODPP is also focused on the provision of intensive, targeted and specialised training on cybercrime, cyber enabled crime and in January 2025 a digital forensic investigation training to prepare and equip our prosecutors for the evolving nature of crime,” Mr Turaga said.
“For us here in Fiji, the recent M-PAiSA scam and the Ebay Shop Online recruitment scam is a classic example of the prevalence of cyber enabled crime. The M-PAiSA scam alone is estimated to be worth $614,435.89.
“Presently, there are 650 cases under investigation at the Criminal Investigation Department of the Fiji Police Force.”
He said the interest from State lawyers for training in specialised areas was growing.
