The $6.5million refurbishment of Waiyevo Hospital in Taveuni will significantly improve healthcare services for communities on the Garden Island, says Health Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu.
Dr Lalabalavu said the project symbolised not only the Government’s commitment to improving public health facilities but also its dedication to the wellbeing of every resident of Taveuni.
“The refurbishment of Taveuni Hospital represents our collective effort to ensure every Fijian has access to safe, modern, and reliable medical services,” he said.
Speaking at the groundbreaking ceremony, Dr Lalabalavu said the refurbishment was being funded by the Australian Government under its cyclone recovery program.
The project will include extensive upgrades to staff areas, recovery rooms, operating theatres, and maternity wards. Wards for men, women, and children will be refurbished, while toilets, bathrooms, and nurses’ stations would also be modernised.
He said the existing roof would be replaced with cyclone-rated materials and new drainage systems installed to prevent flooding.
“These structural and external improvements will ensure our hospital is not only safe but also welcoming,” Dr Lalabalavu said.
“Critical infrastructure like fire safety systems, steel shutters, and waterproofing will also be enhanced.”
More than 70,000 people in Taveuni are expected to benefit from the upgrade.
“Improvements in electrical systems will allow us to use more advanced machines and ensure all wards are properly equipped and functional.”
He said the refurbishment would improve accessibility for all patients, with better walkways, upgraded waiting areas for families, and new signage to make navigation easier.
