5th place finish for Fiji Vonu team

THE Fiji Vonu women’s team have finished off in 5th place after defeating Papua New Guinea 37-7 in the AFL International Cup in Australia.

The ladies produced contrasting results in round four matches winning their semi-final match against European Crusaders 87-1.

Our men’s team went down to Canada in a close match 24-21; they also lost out to Great Britain 56-27 in the semi-final.

Coach Simon Highfield was frustrated with the result, given the potential of the Fiji Tribe team.

“We were pleased to see our midfield dominating,” said Highfield. “Though it was quite a frustrating result considering it was another winnable game that slipped away.

“Dominating through the midfield meant the ball spent a lot of time in our forward line but we just lacked polish and couldn’t convert when it mattered. Hopefully the boys will bounce back and we can seal 7th place with a win over Canada.

“I think that would be a deserving result given our performances so far.”

Fiji Vonu manager Saula Tuilevuka, was again impressed with the girls’ performance.

“It was another great game,” said Tuilevuka.

“Most of the girls continued their strong form from the last few games and we are in a strong position to secure 5th place.

“They defended very well while also being able to be very potent in attack.”

The team will return today to finish what has been a long, draining but successful tour.
