Amid concerns surrounding 5G and people’s health, Digicel Fiji chief executive officer (CEO) Farid Mohammed has given his reassurance that Digicel will “put the health and safety of our customers at the forefront of everything we do”, as the company prepares to roll out its 5G services in Fiji.
“We understand there may be questions surrounding the introduction of 5G technology, and we want to assure all Fijians that we are taking every measure to ensure a safe and seamless rollout of 5G technology,” Mr Mohammed said.
“From a health perspective, Digicel Fiji emphasises that there is no scientific evidence linking telecommunications technologies, including 5G, to adverse health impacts. Digicel Fiji aligns itself with the position of global health authorities, including the World Health Organisation (WHO).”
Digicel Fiji also highlighted that existing Electromagnetic Energy (EME) safety standards encompass 5G technology and Digicel Fiji’s 5G devices and network have undergone rigorous testing to ensure compliance with Fiji’s established safety regulations.
“Due to advancements in network design and device power management, 5G technology emits lower levels of EME compared to previous generations like 2G, 3G and 4G. This translates to a safer and more environmentally friendly network for everyone in Fiji,” Mr Farid said.
“We encourage individuals to rely on credible sources and expert opinions when assessing information related to telecommunications and health.”
Digicel Fiji will be deploying 5G network capability through a process known as spectrum re-farming, which it said uses the existing network spectrum to reduce potential for interference of current services used by customers and businesses.
