The Government through the Fiji National Sports Commission had already allocated $1,350,000.00 of funding to FASANOC for the Pacific Mini Games.
Sports Commission executive chair Peter Mazey revealed this in an interview with this newspaper.
He said the funding was given since October last year.
“That is 52 percent of the total cost of the event,” Mazey said.
National Sporting Organisations like Athletics Fiji has been pleading for support from businesses and the public to help them meet the costs needed for participation.
“The Commission and the government have already contributed the bulk of the money and now they are still asking the athlete for $3,000 each,” he said.
Mazey also stated that he will be meeting with FASANOC president Cathy Wong to discuss how this can be resolved.
“The government has already up the ante, normally they would only give a third, so they are very lucky.
“I am having a meeting with the president of FASANOC later to address, we think that there may be some credit that can be given to the national sports because $3,000 is quite high.
“We have acknowledged that, and the Minister has all the figures on that too.”
On top of the participation funds given, the National Sports Commission has also allocated funds to respective organisations for their preparations for the Pacific Mini Games.
Meanwhile, in a report on The Fiji Times on May 31, 2025, Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka stated, “It’s now the end of May, and I have not seen any attempt from the Ministry of Sports, FASANOC or Fiji Sports Commission come with a request for assistance.”
Team Fiji needs $3.5million to send the athletes and officials to Palau for the June 29 to July 9 Mini Games.
