The Fiji Government is assisting 50,883 senior citizens who are beneficiaries of the social pension scheme managed by the Ministry of Women, Children and Poverty Alleviation.
This is the updated statistic as of March 5 this year.
The social pension scheme (SPS) is one of the six social protection programs implemented by the ministry.
And it is a non-contributory pension for older persons aged 65 years and over, and who have never received superannuation through the Fiji National Provident Fund (FNPF).
The social pension scheme provides a monthly allowance of $100.
According to the ministry, the 2022-2023 budget allocation for this social pension is $55million, and is the highest budget amount among all other social assistance programs.
