THIS year’s Fiji Bitter Marist 7s is more than just another competition for the Ratu Filise Rugby Club as it is a celebration of legacy, pride, and 50 years of unwavering commitment.
As the tournament kicks off today at the HFC Bank Stadium in Suva, the Nadroga side marks a historic milestone, becoming one of the few clubs to feature in this year’s 50th edition since its inception in 1976.
From humble beginnings to becoming a household name in local sevens rugby, the club’s journey is deeply rooted in rugby tradition.
Just two years after the tournament began, the club etched its name in history by winning the 1978 title, powered by Nadroga greats such as Josevata Nagasaukula, Etika Tovilevu and Aminiasi Naituyaga to name a few. Today, that legacy continues to inspire a new generation.
Strength and conditioning coach Selo Sanawa said it is a proud and defining moment for the club.
“This is a huge milestone for us. We acknowledge all former and current management for their effort and commitment in developing grassroots rugby over the years,” Sanawa said.
While history remains a strong pillar, the club’s focus is firmly on the future.
Sanawa revealed that the spotlight is on their under-21 squad which is the next custodians of the Ratu Filise legacy.
“For the Marist 7s, we are focusing on our U21 team because these young players will carry on the tradition built by those before them.
“My expectation is simple for the boys to play with all their heart, stay disciplined, and represent the jersey with pride.”
Sanawa also paid tribute to former players who have rallied behind the team during preparations, reinforcing the deep bond that defines the club.
As the three-day tournament unfolds, Ratu Filise rugby team is calling on its loyal supporters to pack the stands and be part of the golden celebration.
