THE new state of the art Govind Park Stadium in Ba which will have a seating capacity of 8000 spectators, is expected to be completed before October.
The foundation stone laying ceremony for the $4.175 million project was conducted yesterday by the Minister for Local Government, Parveen Kumar yesterday.
The original stadium which was built in 1976 was damaged by Severe Tropical Cyclone Winston in 2016.
The new facility will also have a conference room with 200 seating capacity, a gymnasium, two squash courts, four players change rooms, two dormitories, one medical room, one referees’ room with four canteens and amenities.
The project construction work has been awarded to Four R Electrical and General Contractors Lted.
Bala said it was a significant day for the people of Ba.
“The new stadium will replace the old stadium which was constructed in 1976,” he said.
“The new facility is expected to add value to sports development in Ba and make the facility a contributor promoting eco sports. More events are expected to be organised in this new thrilling environment and a higher turnout expected as the facilities to be constructed are to match the desires of our citizens.”
Bala said Govind Park was historical and had been a significant contributor towards fostering development and economic reticulation in Ba.
“The Park has been a host to many international and local events,” he said.
“It hosted many major tournaments where a record 15,000 plus people have turned up.”
