A BUILDING structure at the Fiji National University’s Labasa Campus in the Naiyaca subdivision has been declared unsafe.

FNU vice-chancellor Professor Unaisi Nabobo-Baba said experts, including qualified architects and engineers, assessed the structure and advised it was too dangerous for use.

“Demolishing it would cost around $3million, so instead we cordoned it off,” she said, adding university had shifted focus to building new classrooms.

“The largest class in Labasa currently has about 60 students, and the new bure will comfortably accommodate them.

“We already have three classrooms completed, and by semester one, we hope to have six ready.”

On the state of the old building, Prof Nabobo-Baba said some areas are classified red zones, making them off-limits for safety reasons.

“In the future, once we have sufficient funds and expert guidance, it may be rehabilitated for cultural and arts exhibitions or partly as a library.”

However, she said despite the delays they remain committed to providing safe, modern learning spaces for students in Labasa.
