A 386-kilogram bluefin tuna was unloaded at Katsuura in western Japan, making it the largest catch in the history of the city’s fishing port since they began keeping records in 1985.
Katsuura is known for having one of the largest catch of tunas in the country. According to a worker at the city’s fishing port, the monster bluefin was caught earlier this week a few hundred kilometres off the coast and was about 2.6 metres long. Its nose had to be cut off in order to fit a shipment box.
In 2013, wealthy businessman Kiyoshi Kimura — who owns Japanese chain Sushi Zanmai — purchased a 488 pound fish (which was just over half the size of the fish caught in Katsuura) for a staggering $US1.76m ($F3.6m).
