36 residents offered homes in Lagilagi flats

THIRTY-SIX residents from Jittu Estate informal settlement in Suva have been issued offer letters to move into the Lagilagi Public Rental Board flats, marking a step toward improved living conditions and secure housing.

Minister for Housing and Local Government Maciu Nalumisa highlighted the development in Parliament on Tuesday, saying the initiative was part of the Government’s broader efforts to expand affordable housing and promote home ownership.

He said enabling them to a transition to secure tenancy arrangements, to significantly improve their living conditions,” he said.

He highlighted the Government was working closely with the Housing Authority of Fiji and the Public Rental Board (PRB) to strengthen housing opportunities for low and middle-income earners.

“The promotion of home ownership, in partnership with Housing Authority and Public Rental Board (PRB), remains a key policy directive. Expanding the supply of affordable housing continues to be a national priority, particularly to support low and middle-income earners in accessing safe, secure and sustainable housing.”

He said the PRB was continuing to expand housing options, including plans to construct additional units at the Lagilagi Housing Estate.

“The Board also plans to construct 157 additional housing units for Lagilagi Housing Estate for the expanding housing options for each tenant.”

Mr Nalumisa added that long-term tenants were also being given opportunities to purchase the homes they had lived in for decades.

“Early in 2025, the Board also issued offer letters to 11 flats in Kalabu and one flat in Makoi, providing tenants with opportunity to purchase homes they have been renting for more than 35 years.”
