Another 35 parcels of suspected illicit drugs were found in the northern parts of the Lau Group yesterday.
Police spokeswoman Ana Naisoro confirmed they were found floating along Munia Island at 3pm.
“Thirty-five packs retrieved after being found floating along Munia Island at 1500 hours (3pm). All are in police custody,” Ms Naisoro said.
Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu said testing was underway for all the drugs previously recovered from the Lau Group.
“There were some positive tests that were already done,” Mr Tudravu said.
“And we are just liaising with our counterparts from other jurisdictions on the source and where it’s from.
“And how come it ended up in our shores.”
When asked whether police had identified where the drugs originated from, Mr Tudravu said investigators had not yet reached that stage.
The Lau drugs discovery this year began on May 30 when a woman and her daughter found a suspicious parcel containing a white substance after returning from a fishing trip on an island in the Lau Group.
The package was handed over to police, prompting an investigation and a public warning advising people not to handle similar items.
The discovery expanded in early June after another 26 parcels suspected to contain illicit drugs were found on Ogea Island.
Police investigations into the discoveries remain ongoing.
