Thirty-Three evacuation centres throughout the affected areas in the Western Division are still active with a total number of 1559 evacuees, says Divisional Commissioner West Apolosi Lewaqai.
“We have discussed with our team as well. We are working with the normal process on moving our families back to their respective houses but that needs a lot of work as well,” Mr Lewaqai said.
He said the Heath Ministry’s priority was to disinfect the communities and ensure they were safe for the evacuees to move back, noting the aftermath of Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, particularly the breeding of diseases such as leptospirosis, dengue, and malaria.
“After that, our team will be moving to those classrooms to disinfect them at a certain time, so that chemicals settle well in the classrooms, and the school compounds, so that it’s safe for the children when they resume next week.”
Mr Lewaqai said his office continued to seek public support in adhering to the advisories issued by the National Disaster Management Office and Fiji Meteorological Services Office.
