THE Foundation for the Education of Needy Children (FENC) Fiji has reached more families than ever before in recent years, especially across the maritime islands, as demand for school support continues to grow.

This week, FENC Fiji received a $30,000 donation from Burger King Fiji.

“Yes, we have been reaching out to families,” said FENC executive coordinator Nirmala Nambiar.

“Over the last two, three years, we have tried to reach out to the maritime islands as well.”

“And I get very emotional when we get calls from parents asking if we have finished our back-to-school assistance.

“I take all their calls. My staff are very genuine about these calls.

“Sometimes we run out of funds, but we approach our sponsors, look at more ways of getting money, and try to help as many people, because sometimes it can be the cut-off that is a bit early.”

Ms Nambiar said internet issues on remote islands often delay applications from families in need, meaning many miss out simply because of their location.

“Because of internet fluctuations especially in the maritime areas, not everybody is able to comply with the timeline.

“So, we reach out, because just listening to those voices, you are able to know whether they are genuine about their needs.”

Burger King Fiji general manager Kavinesh Reddy said education should not just be for a few, but for all children in Fiji because it is their basic right.

“It lays the foundation for dreams, creates opportunities and shapes a better future,” he said.

“We understand that many of the children supported by FENC Fiji come from very challenging and disadvantaged backgrounds, often struggling to access even basic school needs.

“Through our partnership with FENC, we aim to help close that gap and give these children a fair chance at a brighter tomorrow.”

Mr Reddy said the donation is double the amount they contributed in 2024, which was collected via charity boxes placed at all seven of their Burger King outlets in Fiji.
