THIRTY interested parties have responded to the tender invitation placed for a new sugar mill in Rakiraki.
Sugar Minister Charan Jeath Singh said some companies offered partial funding, while others proposed supplying the mill without financial backing.
He said there was also a proposal from a Chinese company which included both advanced technology and funding to make the project a reality.
“They want to put a state-of-the-art mill, and they will also fund it,” he said.
He said he would meet with the company sometime this week to finalise arrangements.
“I will meet with them and the Fiji Sugar Corporation board.”
While the mill may not be completed before the next election, he said, groundwork and foundational work would begin soon.
The new facility, he said, would produce raw sugar, refined sugar, ethanol, and power, diversifying operations to maximise profits.
