$2M to boost Churchill Park, says AG

GOVERNMENT’S allocation of more than $2 million towards the upgrade of Churchill Park will allow Lautoka to begin hosting mega sporting events like the Coca-Cola Games athletics finals.

This was the comment made by Attorney General Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the groundbreaking ceremony of the PMeghji Group’s $23million Shirley Park hotel project.

“What this will mean is that Lautoka will soon have the capacity to host the Fiji Finals or Coca-Cola Games,” he said.

“We have always had the games in Suva and all the children from other parts of Fiji have always had to travel to Suva.

“So this now gives Lautoka the opportunity to host people from the Central and Eastern Divisions.”

Lautoka City Council CEO Jone Nakauvadra said the PMeghji hotel development combined with the Tanoa Waterfront Hotel’s expansion program would ensure accommodation facilities were available for major sporting and tourism events.

“The council came up with the idea to develop this site with a hotel and conference facility because Lautoka had been missing out on hosting big conferences and events along with their unlimited spin-offs,” he said.
