Sustainable development becoming an increasingly critical consideration, Fiji National University has taken it upon themselves to lead the next generation by example with their eco-friendly new building for their College of Business, Hospitality and Tourism Studies, constructed by Cope Construction Ltd.
Director of Capital Projects and Infrastructure Niranjwan Chettiar spoke of the many environmentally friendly and accessible considerations built into the new lecture theatre where the opening ceremony for the building was held
. “This $27 million project is the first of its kind for the university. It is unique in terms of its capacity and the spaces within it,” he said, adding that the seats are designed to be accessible to persons who are differently abled.
According to Mr Chettier the lights in the facility have been specifically designed to ensure that the university’s lighting efficiency requirements are met and the air-conditioning systems are programmed to avoid energy wastage.
“Being strong advocates for sustainability, we ensured that the contractors adhered to sustainable waste management practices,” Mr Chettier added, saying the building is designed for resilience and the facility has backup water and power systems in place.
Vice chancellor Professor Lyn Karstadt said “Fiji National University has continuously prioritised the provision of affordable and accessible education for all Fijians. So this is just part of our building master plan and I hope you will keep your eyes out to see what other things we bring to you and open in the next few years.”
