Fiji recorded 264 earthquakes during July, with seismic activity ranging from minor tremors to a maximum magnitude of 5.9, according to the Fiji Seismology Unit.
The earthquake summary for July showed recorded events had magnitudes as low as 1.2, with activity concentrated in several areas across the Fiji region.
A high concentration of shallow earthquakes was detected in the northern part of Fiji, particularly around Vanua Levu, extending from the northern Yasawas to Cikobia Island along the Fiji Fracture Zone.
The Seismology Unit said this level of activity is expected for the fault zone.
Deep earthquakes, occurring between 300 and 600 kilometres below the surface, were mainly recorded east of Fiji beneath the Lau Basin. These events are associated with subduction activity, where the Pacific Plate moves beneath the Indo-Australian Plate.
Other areas experiencing shallow and minor seismic activity included Kadavu Island, linked to the Hunter Fracture Zone, as well as southeast Viti Levu and parts of inland Vanua Levu.
