The Fiji Seismology Unit has reported a total of 261 earthquakes in the Fiji region for the month of August 2025, with magnitudes ranging from 1.3 to 5.4.

According to the monthly seismic activity summary, a high concentration of shallow earthquakes was recorded in the northern region, particularly around Vanua Levu, stretching from the northern Yasawa Islands to Cikobia.

These tremors occurred along the well-known Fiji Fracture Zone, a tectonically active fault system.

In addition to the shallow events, deep-focus earthquakes (300–600 km below the surface) were detected east of Fiji, mainly beneath the Lau Basin.

These deeper events are attributed to subduction activity, where the Pacific Plate continues to descend beneath the Indo-Australian Plate, said Fiji Seismology.

Other shallow quakes were also recorded around southwest Kadavu, southeast Viti Levu, and other parts of Vanua Levu, all areas known for active geological fault lines.

The Seismology Unit is reminding the public to report any felt earthquakes, which helps with rapid data confirmation and supports ongoing monitoring and research efforts.
