Nicole Matavesi, 21, from Qamea, Taveuni, is vying for the FMF Hibiscus crown.
Born in Suva and raised in Nadera, the Coconique Boutique sponsored lass is currently pursuing a degree in International Relations, Politics, International Business, and Marketing at the University of the South Pacific – while working as a marketing coordinator at Damodar Cinemas.
“I like to read and play a lot of Dungeons and Dragons,” she said.
“I also write my own fictional stories, though I keep them private. I model occasionally, play a bit of guitar, and I used to dance with ManaVa Performing Arts.”
Nicole’s advocacy is on equity over equality and youth participation in public spaces.
“When I talk about equity, I mean everyone starting at the same line. Equality offers the same rights, but it doesn’t account for the uneven playing field, especially for youths from rural areas who miss out on scholarships because they’re less privileged compared to those in cities like Suva.”
She also stressed the importance of youth voices.
“Youth need to be involved in public spaces — politics, education, agriculture, tourism — to share their ideas and fuel progress. I also champion women’s rights and decolonisation.”
Her message to aspiring young women was clear.
“Any young girl watching the Hibiscus, no matter her age or background, can be on the stage. With the right support from family, friends, and community, she can achieve anything.”
