Fiji experienced its second warmest year on record since 1959, according to the 2024 Annual Climate Summary released by the Fiji Meteorological Service, with data revealing stark changes in the nation’s climate over more than six decades.
The report shows that Fiji’s national average air temperature has risen by 1.1°C between 1959 and 2024. Daytime maximum temperatures have increased by 1.2°C, while nighttime minimum temperatures have risen by 1.0°C.
This places 2024 among the hottest years in Fiji’s history, only second to the warmest year ever recorded since systematic observations began 65 years ago.
“The long-term warming trend is clear. What we are seeing today is not just a bad year — it’s a symptom of a shifting climate that has been evolving since the mid-20th century,” said Fiji Meteorological Service.
Globally, the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) confirmed that 2024 was the warmest year in 175 years of global climate observation, underlining the worldwide nature of the crisis.
