CONSIDERING that the sea is the main mode of transportation for the people of Vesi Village on the island of Mali in Macuata, villagers believe that any government needs to conduct more maritime safety trainings in coastal villages.

Vesi villager Epeli Saukuru said sea mishaps continued to occur in maritime islands around the country because boat captains failed to adhere to standard boat handling procedures.

“It is sad to see that despite the presence of authorities to address this issue, we still have sea mishaps costing people’s lives,” he said.

“Providing training for boat handlers in rural areas is something that the new Government needs to seriously look at.”

Mr Saukuru was among the 31 villagers who cast their votes at their venue today.
