Update: 9:56PM GOVERNMENT will spend $100,000 to build a walkway leading to the sea for people who cremate their loved ones and spread ashes in open waters.
Attorney-General and Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum said this was directed mostly to Fijians living in the Suva-Nausori corridor, especially Hindus.
“We’ve allocated funds to build a walkway to the sea that would give them a quiet and dignified site where they can perform the sacred funeral rituals and cast the ashes of their loved ones into the sea,” he said.
“Government maintains cemeteries through the Fiji Corrections Services and as a matter of fairness and respect, we provide such a site for which we will spend $100,000.”
