$200k to award legal tenancy

A TOTAL of $200,000 has been allocated for the awarding of legal tenancy to 104 families in Field 40, Lautoka, which is still left to be handed approval notices to lease their current residential lots.

This was confirmed by Minister for Lands Mereseini Vuniwaqa during the third day of the 2016 National Budget debate in Parliament yesterday.

Mrs Vuniwaqa said the $200,000 was allocated to the ministry for the regularisation of squatters living on State land.

She said for a more co-ordinated government approach, relevant ministers would be meeting in the next few weeks.

The Lands Minister said the discussions were to ensure that the initiative was driven in a collaborative manner and that optimal results were obtained from the government program.

Last month, Prime Minister Voreqe Bainimarama handed out 44 approval notices to Field 40 squatter residents.

Mr Bainimarama confirmed 184 squatters from Field 40 were being regularised.

According to the Lands Ministry, 50 squatter settlements across the country would be regularised by Government.
