A $2.2million pharmaceutical and biomedical storage facility in Labasa which opened in March this year is operating at only half capacity.
Labasa Hospital’s medical superintendent, Dr Jaoji Vulibeci said the warehouse faced an inadequate power supply problem.
“They have their own power, but it’s not enough,” he said.
The warehouse was supposed to play a key role in storing and distributing a wide range of medicines, vaccines and medical equipment to 65 healthcare facilities across the Northern Division.
Its limited power supply threatens to disrupt the timely delivery of essential medical items to hospitals and clinics that depend on it.
“They use their own generators now and then, but it can’t fully support the warehouse needs,” Dr Vulibeci said.
Currently on extended leave, Dr Vulibeci said he was unaware of any current medicine shortage but acknowledged the difficulties caused by the unreliable power situation.
