A research team from the Ministry of Fisheries has successfully monitored and released 19 hawksbill turtle hatchlings at Leleuvia Island Resort, one of Fiji’s key nesting sites for the critically endangered species.
The team recorded one active nest, with resort staff reporting that hatchlings began emerging shortly after midnight on February 15, 2026, following an incubation period of about 70 days.
Nineteen hatchlings were assessed by fisheries officers before release, while others made their way to the sea unaided.
The Ministry praised the resort’s continued commitment to protecting nesting sites and said it will keep working with partners to ensure the long-term conservation of Fiji’s sea turtle populations.
