THE recent handing over of a Land Cruiser ambulance will help handle the tough hilly terrain in the Tavua Subdivision, serving health facilities such as Nadarivatu, says Health and Medical Services Minister Dr Ratu Atonio Lalabalavu.

He said at the hand-over ceremony on Monday, the refurbished ambulance cost about $185,000.

“As we all know too well, the ministry faces ongoing challenges in maintaining a consistent and fully-operational ambulance fleet,” he said.

“Delays in servicing, mechanical breakdowns, accidents, and compliance issues such as an overdue wheel tax disrupt our ability to respond swiftly and save lives.

“That is why receiving and releasing this new ambulance into your keep and care must not be treated as just a hand-over; it is a transfer of responsibility.”

Mr Lalabalavu said the duty of care for the new ambulance was now on the sub-divisional medical officers and ambulance drivers.

“To our drivers, the ambulance you drive is more than just a vehicle.

“It is a mobile emergency room.

“Your responsibility goes beyond transportation; you are the first point of care.

“Please take pride in your role and ensure that these ambulances are operated safely, responsibly, and are maintained to the highest standards.”
