EIGHTEEN village headmen posts in Nalawa, Ra, were confirmed during a Bose ni Vanua at Matawailevu Village on Friday.
The village headmen whose positions were confirmed by the Ra Provincial Council were announced before Tui Nalawa Ratu Epeli Niudamu.
While welcoming the turaga ni koro, Ratu Epeli said it was vital for the leaders to know the importance of their roles.
He said the services that each leader would carry out were important to ensure the smooth running of their village.
He said learning their traditional roles and ensuring villagers were aware of cultural protocols were also important.
“In this day and age, there is a lot of change happening but it’s important that our turaga ni koro, our yavusa and mataqali leaders ensure that our traditions and cultural practices do not change,” he said.
“I believe that they can carry out their work diligently.
“They have the important task to ensure that we take care of our people, our land and our resources and ensure that we all prosper.
“One of the most important aspects of their roles is that they ensure we maintain our relationships with the vanua and with those outside of it.”
Ra Provincial Council assistant roko tui Timoci Ratu said the names of each village headman, yavusa and mataqali head had been registered with the council and the Ministry of iTaukei Affairs.
