A group of dedicated human rights activists took their time to paint civic structures in Sigatoka Town as part of their support towards the 16 days of activism against gender-based violence.

The project, an initiative by members of the Soroptimist Club of Sigatoka, with permission from the Sigatoka Town Council, were equipped with paint and paint brushes last week.

The group painted bus shelters and benches along the Sigatoka River with the colours orange and purple.

Club member Suman Lal said the team decided to take on the initiative in their bid to spread awareness on violence against women and girls in Fiji and around the world.

“Let us all join hands,” Ms Lal said.

“The colours are just only for beautification but to remind everyone passing our town and our own people that it’s time to take responsibility to end violence.”

Ms Lal said the purple colour paid tribute to survivors of domestic violence and is a symbol of peace — purple also being a colour for women.

The orange signified strength to end violence against women and girls.

The 16 days of activism against gender-based violence ends on Sunday, November 10.
