WOMEN, Children and Social Protection Minister Sashi Kiran has expressed concern at the rape of a 14-year-old in Lautoka earlier this year where the suspect is still at large.
The victim gave birth to a baby boy on November 4, and her aunt lodged a report with the Social Welfare Department last week over “police inaction”.
“It’s deeply distressing to know another innocent life had to undergo such a traumatic experience,” she said.
“A child now has to take responsibility for another child. It’s very tragic.”
She said the ministry has been providing the young mother counselling and other essential support services.
“The ministry remains in close communication with the police, who have assured us that investigations are progressing, and we trust that justice will be served.
“For now, our focus is on ensuring the young mother and child receive necessary support.”
Meanwhile, police spokesperson Wame Boutolu has assured the family investigations into the incident were continuing.
“The police will look at all options including DNA,” he said.
