MINISTER for Women, Children, and Social Protection Sashi Kiran has called on all sectors of society to take responsibility in protecting children.

She emphasised the importance of vigilance and proactive efforts by families, neighbours, faith leaders, teachers, youth groups and community members in safeguarding children’s wellbeing.

“If you suspect that a child is at risk – please speak up and seek assistance through the toll-free helpline 1325,” Ms Kiran said.

“Silence allows harm to continue; action brings safety and healing.”

While making her remarks at the Save the Children “Prevention of Child Abuse and Neglect Prayer Vigil” held at Suva’s Sacred Heart Cathedral on Friday, she highlighted on the modern parenting struggles amid weakened family support systems.

“We know that in today’s age when families don’t have their social security systems and everyone is focused on earning, parenting can be very difficult and parenting support is needed.

“Many young parents feed their children processed food without understanding the value of nutrition,” she stated.

She reaffirmed government commitments, including the Child Safeguarding Policy, Child Protection and Child Justice Acts, and ongoing implementation efforts to strengthen systems, reporting pathways and service delivery.

“Early intervention saves lives. When families receive support before challenges escalate, when teachers recognise early warning signs, and when communities take action, we break cycles of trauma and build healthier futures.”

She commended faith communities for fostering moral values and child-safe environments.

“Today’s gathering unites us in solidarity to end all forms of violence against children in Fiji and beyond.

“It is a moment of remembrance for those who have suffered harm, and a moment of reaffirmation as we commit ourselves to a future where every child is protected.”
