146 jobs under review

ONE hundred and forty-six government positions are being reviewed as part of the civil service reforms.

This was revealed by Finance Minister Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum during the 2016-2017 National Budget consultation at Suva Grammar School hall yesterday.

He was responding to a submission by Rishikul Sanatan College student Janisha Prasad, who asked if Government could consider increasing the salaries of teachers.

Ms Prasad said teachers worked extra hours on Saturdays and during afternoon classes but were only paid for the eight hours of work.

“As part of the civil service reforms, we have some external consultants at the moment who are reviewing about 146 positions throughout Government to see whether the right market pay is being paid or not.

“We want to improve the salaries and conditions of teachers overall and other civil servants too.”

Meanwhile, the A-G said it was part of the Government’s agenda to get more teacher-student ratio and they were looking at increasing that.

More than 200 students from schools in the Central Division gathered at the SGS hall yesterday to make their submissions.
